WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness where the subconscious level of the mind is in a state of hyper-suggestibility. It can be used to assist clients with a wide range of issues that may be causing them problems in life. It is a tool used to help someone to maximize skills or to stop doing something that the person currently does and would like to stop. An example is weight loss or smoking cessation.
One common misconception of hypnosis is that the person is unconscious while under hypnosis. Another is that the person surrenders their will and submits to the power of the hypnotist. Neither of these is true. Hypnosis cannot make a person do something against their will. A client is aware of everything while being hypnotized, which also gives them the ability to talk during the process.
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN LOOKING FOR A HYPNOTIST
The hypnotist you hire should be trained and certified by at least one of the major certifying bodies. The primary ones are the National Guild of Hypnotists and the American Board of Hypnotherapy. These are the oldest, largest and most reputable organizations. Make sure the hypnotist’s certification is current. Hypnotherapy can only be used by licensed clinicians who are also formally trained in hypnosis. While some hypnotherapists might focus on suggestion work or other “quick” styles of hypnosis, my focus will be on getting to the root of the issue.
